RICHARD DAVID WHITEHEAD was trained at Manchester Technical College and with Messrs. Mather and Platt, where he spent thirteen years in the works and the drawing office.

From 1888 to 1890 he was in an architect and surveyor's office at Colne, and in the latter year he became a teacher in the Derby School of Art and Science. Nine years later he was appointed head of the engineering department of the Derby Technical College, and he retained this position until his retirement in 1925.

His death occurred on 17th June 1928 at the age of 68.

He became an Associate of the Institution in 1892 and an Associate Member in 1904.
