"REGINALD JAMES MCLAREN WHIBLEY was sales manager to the Churchill Machine Tool Company, Ltd., of Broadheath, near Manchester, at the time of his death, which occurred in his sixty-fourth year, on 30th May 1949.
He was well known in the machine tool industry and had served on many committees during the past twenty-five years. He was educated at Alleyns College, Dulwich, and at the Battersea Polytechnic Institute, where he took a three years' course in mechanical engineering. After serving his time in the Battersea shops of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway from 1902 to 1905, he was employed for the next two years as a technical assistant by Messrs. Marks and Clerk, patent agents. From 1910 to 1918 he was with the Acetylene Illuminating Co (now the British Oxygen Company, Ltd.) and for most of that period was engaged as assistant engineer with the charge of the drawing office. Before joining the Churchill Machine Tool Co in 1926 he was on the staff of "Machinery" as associate editor. Mr. Whibley had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1942. He was awarded the Constantine Gold Medal of the Manchester Association of Engineers for a paper on "The Production of Flat Surfaces", which he presented in 1947."
