PETER BUTCHART MURRAY who was born at Dundee in 1870, retained a connection with his native city during most of his lifetime. He served his apprenticeship at Errol, Perthshire, with Mr. R. G. Morton, engineer, and from 1891 to 1897 was in the employment of Messrs. James Carmichael and Company, Ward Foundry, Dundee. For a brief period he was chief draughtsman to Messrs. Thomson, Son and Company, but returned to Messrs. Carmichael to occupy a similar position.
In 1902 he was appointed works manager to the same firm. After a brief period in London where he acted as technician and manager to Messrs. Fraser and Fraser, boilermakers, Bromley-by-Bow, he returned to Dundee and established in 1913 the firm of Sturrock and Murray, marine and general engineers. Mr. Murray continued actively in business until his death, which occurred on 27th July 1943 and had the satisfaction of seeing the original form, which was formed into a limited liability company in 1920, develop an extensive connection as mechanical and electrical power engineers, millwrights, and machine makers.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1919.
