1946 Obituary

Lt.-Colonel MARSHALL EDWARD HARDING CHURTON, R.E.M.E., was born in 1900, and educated at Uppingham School and at Cambridge University, where he studied engineering. He then served a four years' apprenticeship with Messrs. T. Harding, Churton and Company, of Leeds, in whose employment he continued as assistant works manager.

He joined the board of directors in 1929 and two years later took over the management of works in the North of England on the amalgamation of Messrs. Churton with Messrs. Newtons of Taunton. On his return from an extensive tour in the colonies and other parts of the world, in connexion with the development of the firm's export trade, he accepted an appointment as production manager for Messrs. Crypton Equipment, Ltd., London, a position he held jointly with that of a directorship in the Middleton Estate and Colliery Company, for whom he acted as adviser on electrification and the provision of modernized plant. In 1940 he was gazetted to the R.A.O.C., with the rank of lieutenant and served in France. Subsequently he was promoted to be major R.E.M.E., on the staff, and was O.C. workshops.

Colonel Churton, whose death occurred on 6th October 1945 at York Military Hospital, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1943.
