MARK HALLIDAY commenced his engineering career at the age of 16 with Messrs. Bell Brothers of Middlesbrough, in whose service he remained for six years.

In 1907 he became a draughtsman at the Grange Iron Works, Durham, but in the following year he entered Armstrong College, Newcastle, and after a three years' course gained his B.Sc. degree in engineering.

His college training completed, he joined Messrs. Richardsons, Westgarth and Company as draughtsman, and later Messrs. Pease and Partners as engineer.

In 1916 he returned to Messrs. Bell Brothers as chief engineer and became responsible for the mechanical work in connexion with four large colleries, five ironstone nines, and two quarries.

Four years later he was appointed chief engineer for Messrs. Pease and Partners' east group of collieries, and in 1927 he became responsible for the engineering work in connexion with the whole of the firm's collieries.

Mr. Halliday, who died on 16th October 1927, became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1916 and a Member in 1920.
