Louis Gustave Mouchel (1852-1908) of Mouchel and Partners

1852 January 11th. Born and educated in Cherbourg

Trained as a naval officer and then as an engineer at the Government School of Mines.

Joined the Department of Highways.

1875 Moved to Briton Ferry in Wales and formed the Cardiff Washed Coal and Fuel Co.

He became the agent for a system of reinforced concrete developed by François Hennebique which he referred to as ferroconcrete.

1907 Founded L. G. Mouchel which subsequently became one of the United Kingdom's largest engineering consultancies.

He spent most of his adult life in the United Kingdom but died in Cherbourg in 1908.

He never married

The death of Mr. L. G. Mouchel is announced as having taken place at Cherbourg on the 27th May last. He was born in that town in 1852, and received his education as an engineer at the Government School of Mines in France. He was subsequently engaged in engineering practice in France, until he came to England and settled in South Wales as a mining engineer . . . has covered the country with examples of ferro-concrete buildings and engineering works to the number of some 600, being practically the pioneer of this important form of construction in England . . .
