1889 Amalgamation of the National Telephone Co with the United Telephone Co and the Lancashire and Cheshire Telephonic Exchange Co (company started 1881) took place, effective 4 July[1] despite protests from the Postmaster General about the proposed amalgamation. This provided 23,585 lines. The United Telephone Co was then liquidated.
