JOSEPH THOMAS. after completing his general education and serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Sandycroft, Ltd., mining engineers, of Chester, saw war service as an air mechanic in the R.A.F., during 1918 and 1919. He subsequently received his technical education at Liverpool University, where he graduated B.Eng. in 1922, and after taking a first-class honours course in electrical engineering obtained his M.Eng. degree in 1925. Concurrently with his university education he gained experience in the drawing office of the British Thomson Houston Company and in 1923 was appointed senior draughtsman and calculator to the English Electric Company, Ltd., a post which involved technical skill of a high order and considerable responsibility.
After holding this position for seven years he joined the staff of the City Technical College, Liverpool, as lecturer in mechanical and electrical engineering with responsibility to the Principal for preparing candidates for the engineering degree of London University. Prior to his untimely death, which occurred in his forty-seventh year, on 16th June 1942, Mr. Thomas was engaged on the important task of giving intensive courses to various army units.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1940.
