MR. JOSEPH FISHER was born in London in the year 1832.
After receiving an education under private tutors, he was articled to the late firm of Messrs. Fox, Henderson and Co., during which time he was employed in the construction of various engineering works, including bridges on the Great Northern railway, and the building for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
Subsequently he was engaged in the construction of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham, of rolling stock, &c., in Belgium, for the Western of Switzerland railway, and the superintendence of the contract for the Wiesbaden railway. He likewise visited America to investigate and report upon the condition of various lines of railway there, on behalf of the English shareholders.
For Sir Charles Fox he inspected the materials for the Cape Town railway together with other worlra. In the year 1860 he joined his younger brother, and with him carried out contracts for the late Mr. Vignoles, Past-President Inst. C.E., and other engineers.
In March 1874 the business connection between the two brothers ceased, and subsequently Mr. Joseph Fisher's health gradually declined up to the time of his death, which took place on the 29th of April, 1877.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution in December 1859.
