JOHN WILSON BROADHEAD, though born in Huddersfield in 1866, received his early education in Austria.
Returning to Huddersfield at the age of fourteen, he was for a few years engaged in the works of Messrs. Holmes and Co., afterwards entering the works of Messrs. Robert Dempster and Sons, Elland, in 1884.
He occupied successive positions until in 1898 he became Managing Director of the firm. The firm manufacture gas plant and Mr. Broadhead did much towards the introduction of the spiral gas-holder, the first British projector stoking machinery, the first British intermittent vertical retort system and the well-known continuous vertical retort system.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1914, and was a Founder and Past-Chairman of the Society of British Gas Industries.
He died on 28th November 1926.
