"JOHN RILEY, M.SC., was associated with the firm of Messrs. Asa Lees and Company, Ltd., textile engineers, of Oldham, for over thirty years, including his apprenticeship, which he served from 1900 to 1905.
He was born in 1886 and received his education at Oldham Technical College and at the Victoria University of Manchester, where he won the Platt Exhibition and graduated B.Sc. with honours in engineering, proceeding later to the degree of M.Sc. in metallurgy. On the completion of his studies in 1910 he was appointed metallurgist and technical engineer to Messrs. Asa Lees, and later took over the additional duties of works and foundry manager. He maintained his connexion with the firm until 1933 when he went to Barnsley to become works manager to Messrs. Wilson and Company, Ltd., engineers. This position he resigned in 1938. Mr. Riley was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1925 and was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. His death occurred in 1948. He found time during his connexion with Messrs. Asa Lees to act as advanced engineering lecturer at the Oldham Municipal Technical College from 1912 to 1933."
