John Marryat (c1906-1965)
1965 Obituary[1]
"We regret to record the death at his London home on October 14, at the age of fifty-nine of Dr. John Marryat, D.Sc. A. M.I.E.E. L.R.C.P., a director of Marryat and Scott Ltd., the lift and escalator manufacturing company. Son of the late Howard Marryat, he qualified as a chartered electrical engineer and entered the family business of Marryat and Place although in his early year he had always had an ambition to become a doctor.
On returning in 1945 from war service in minesweepers as a Lieutenant-Commander R.N.V.R. with a D.S.C., Dr. Scott enrolled as a medical student at Middlesex Hospital, where he qualified six years later. He became a director with his brother Robert and his father's partner, Mr. Murray D. Scott of the electrical engineering and lift business which his father had created . Dr. John, as he was now known, never lost interest in the business and continued to attend board meetings and to participate in its development. Meanwhile he had formed, with Mr. E. J. Tunnicliffe, Exal Ltd., a company to manufacture X-ray and electromedical equipment and this expanded until new premises were opened recently at Basingstoke."
