"JOHN LOVELL BROWNE, who was born in 1889, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1943. He served his apprenticeship in the locomotive works of the Metropolitan Railway from 1905 to 1910, where he continued as a junior assistant engineer until 1912 when he took up an appointment as branch manager at Sheffield for Messrs. Siemens Brothers and Company, Ltd. The 1914-18 war, however, interrupted his professional career and for five years he served in the Royal Engineers and was granted a commission. From 1921 to 1938 he was managing director of Messrs. Tylors, Ltd., builders and designers of internal combustion engines. A year later he became a director of Messrs. Warner Engineering Equipment, Ltd., Godalming, Surrey (now Cuthbert Machine Tools, Ltd., Guildford), and continued to hold office up to the time of his death, which occurred on 20th February 1950."
