JOHN HEWITSON DALE was engaged for the greater part of his career in lecturing on mechanical engineering in various technical colleges.
He was born at Darlington in 1884 and served his apprenticeship in the works of the Darlington Railway Plant, Foundry and General Engineering Company from 1898 to 1903, and in the North Eastern Railway locomotive works from 1903 to 1905.
He received his technical education at Darlington Technical College, where after completing his apprenticeship, he was appointed assistant lecturer in mechanical engineering at the age of 21. A year later he became lecturer in mechanical engineering.
In 1908 and 1909 he studied at the Royal College of Science, under Professor Perry, and obtained the King's Prize in machine drawing. He afterwards returned to Darlington, where he designed special laboratory apparatus for measuring the frictional and eddy losses of water in pipes and bends.
In 1919 he became head of the engineering department at Sheerness Technical College, and in the same year published a textbook on machine drawing which was widely used. Mr. Dale was later appointed lecturer at Halifax Technical College, and held this position until his retirement in 1929.
He then lived at Eyemouth, Scotland, until his death, which occurred on 21st April 1932.
He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1916.
