JOHN CLEGHORN died on September 24, 1907, at his residence, South View, North Common Road, Ealing, in his ninety-second year. For several years he occupied a post in the secretary's department of the York and North Midland Railway, which afterwards became the North-Eastern Railway. He became assistant secretary in 1854, and two years later he was appointed secretary, on the reorganisation of the staff. This post he held fourteen years. He was elected to the directorate in 1870, remaining on the board until 1904, when he retired. He represented the North Eastern Railway Company, for a number of years, on the Railway Clearing Home Committee.

He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1874.
