JOHN CHALMERS HUNTER was born at Greenock on the 23rd June 1877, and was educated at the High School, Dunfermline, and at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College.
He was apprenticed at the North British Railway Workshops, Cowlairs, Glasgow.
After several years in the Company's Drawing Office, latterly as Senior Draughtsman, he joined the Great Central Railway Co. at Gorton in 1904, as draughtsman in the Carriage and Wagon Department, and was promoted to Foreman in 1908. During that period he prepared the plans for the new Carriage and Wagon Works at Dukinfield.
In 1908 he took up the position of District Carriage and Wagon Superintendent with the North Western Railway of India.
In the war he served in the East African Campaign and returned to the Railway in 1918 with the rank of Major. During the Indian disturbances of 1919 he displayed great firmness and tact in dealing with critical situations, and was appointed Area Officer under the Martial Law regime.
His death, which took place at sea on the 25th September 1921, in his forty-fifth year, was due to illness contracted on active service.
He joined the Institution as a Graduate in 1901, and was elected an Associate Member in 1903.
