John Carrington Sellars (1840-1916)
1840 Born in Manchester[1], son of John Sellars and his wife Eliza[2]; John was a book-keeper of Miles Platting.
1861 Chemical assistant, visiting his mother who was boarding in Chorlton upon Medlock with his wife Elizabeth, 19[3]
1863 Patent by Elijah Freeman Prentiss, of Birkenhead, Manufacturing. Chemist, and John Carrington Sellars, of the same place, Chemist, in respect of the invention of "improvements in treating rock oil, petroleum, paraffin oil, coal oil, and paraffine and other, like mineral oils and products therefrom."[4]
1864 Bankruptcy: John Carrington Sellars, of 1, Warwick Street, analytical chemist and dealer in oil, and for eight months last past carrying on the business of a dealer in oil at a shop, 11, Claughton Road, and for about thirteen months previously to residing in Warwick Street, 45, Bentinck Street, all in Birkenhead, Chester, carrying on the same business, and during portions of the above periods being engaged in the service of Messrs Prentiss and Co., of Birkenhead, oil merchants, as analytical chemist and manager, and before living at Bentick Street aforesaid, residing at 129, Crown Street, Liverpool, Lancaster, and carrying on the business of provision dealer and analytical chemist.[5]
1867 Patent by John Carrington Sellars, of Birkenhead, Manufacturing Chemist, for the invention of "improvements in the utilization of a certain waste material obtained in the manufacture of hydro-carbon liquids."[6]
1870 Patent by John Carrington Sellars, of Birkenhead, Manufacturing Chemist, in respect of the invention of "improvements in Metal Founders' blacking."[7]
1871 Chemist, living in Birkenhead with Elizabeth A Sellars 29, Mary H Sellars 9, Francis P Sellars 7, Charles S Sellars 1[8]
1872 Patent by John Carrington Sellars, Manufacturing Chemist, in respect of the invention of " improvements in artificial fuel."[9]
1873 Elected a member of the Chemical Society
1874 Patent by John Carrington Sellars, of Birkenhead, Manufacturing Chemist, for the invention of "improvements in artificial stone."[10]
1876 Patent by John Carrington Sellars, Manufacturing Chemist, in respect of the invention of "improvements in erecting buildings of concrete and in apparatus employed therein." [11]
1877 Patent by John Carrington Sellars, Manufacturing Chemist, in respect of "improvements in and in connection with moulds and frames for giving form to concrete blocks and structures."[12]
1878 Patent by John Carrington Sellars, Manufacturing Chemist, in respect of the invention of "improvements in apparatus or appliances to be used in moulding artificial stone for building purposes."[13]
