James William Haworth was born in 1877, and was educated at Greenacres School, Oldham, and Owens College, Manchester. He was apprenticed to John Hetherington and Sons in the latter city, and on completion of his articles went to India for the firm to superintend the erection of cotton mills.
He was subsequently employed on similar work in Italy, Russia and in this country.
In 1902 he became assistant to a civil and mechanical engineer, and in 1904 went into business on his own account as motor engineer and agent in Manchester, where he subsequently established a well-equipped repair works. He was associated with this business up to the time of his death, which took place in February, 1926.
He was elected a Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1911.
