JAMES THOMAS DOUGLAS was apprenticed at the age of 15 to Messrs. Thomas Richardson and Sons, marine engine builders of Hartlepool, and after spending a period at sea and gaining a first class Board of Trade certificate he attained the position of guarantee. chief engineer.
In 1885 he joined his brother, Mr. Robert R. Douglas, as consulting surveyor and claims adviser at Liverpool and later became one of the first directors of the limited liability company which was subsequently formed by them.
During his long practice is Liverpool Mr. Douglas was consulted by many important marine concerns, including the Salvage Association of London.
He was also for many years consulting engineer for the coasting fleet of Messrs. R. Gilchrist and Company of Liverpool.
His death occurred on 26th July 1928, at the age of 77.
He had been a Member of the Institution since 1909.
