"JAMES SUTHERLAND was associated with the development of the British Aluminium Company, Ltd., for nearly forty-five years. He had been manager of this company's alumina works at Larne Harbour, Northern Ireland, since 1895, and in 1896, the year of his election as an Associate Member, he gave a paper dealing with this factory to the Institution.

He was born at Carrickfergus in 1869 and he received his education there from 1874 to 1883 and at Aberdeen from 1883 to 1886. From 1886 to 1894 he was engaged in the North of Ireland Paper Mills, Ballyclare, as draughtsman, electrician, and chemist. The year 1894 he spent superintending the erection of electric lighting plants in Northern Ireland and in the following year he took up his post with the British Aluminium Company, Ltd. During the time he held this position the works of this company were several times reconstructed under his supervision. He died at Larne Harbour on 5th August 1939."
