"JAMES MOFFAT, whose death occurred on 28th November 1947, at the age of sixty-one, had a long record of service with the Dundee Corporation and had held the position of chief engineer of the transport department for fifteen years. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Urquhart, Lindsay and Company, Ltd., engineers, of Dundee, from 1902 to 1909, and during most of this period attended the Dundee Technical Institute. After some experience at an engineering works in Melbourne he began, in 1911, his long connection with the transport department of the Dundee Corporation.
During the war of 1914-18 he served as a test fitter to Sir W. G. Armstrong and Company, Ltd., of New castle upon Tyne, returning to Dundee in 1918. He was promoted works foreman in 1924 and four years later was made superintendent. His final appointment, as chief engineer, dated from 1931. Mr. Moffat was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1938."
