"JAMES GRAVENOR had considerable experience as an automobile engineer. He was works manager to the Pilgrims Way Motor Co, of Farnham, Surrey, for forty-four years, having held that appointment from 1905 until his death, which occurred in September 1949.
He was born in 1874 and began an apprenticeship in 1887 with Mr. R. W. Frankham, of Clerkenwell, London, instrument maker, on the termination of which, seven years later, he was employed as a fitter by the Maskelyne Typewriter Co, of Hammersmith. After further experience as an instrument maker with Messrs. Belsham and Company, Westminster, he went to Colchester, where he found employment as a toolmaker at the Maponite Works. Prior to taking up his final appointment at Farnham he was engaged on chassis production for Messrs. James and Browne, of Hammersmith. Mr. Gravenor had been an Associate of the Institution of Automobile Engineers since 1907."
