"James ERNEST WALKER spent almost the whole of his professional career in India, where for many years he was associated with water supply engineering.
He was born in 1887, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. R. and W, Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Ltd., locomotive engineers, of Newcastle upon Tyne, from 1901 to 1908, in whose employment he continued as assistant to the works manager for a further two years. He then proceeded to India, having received an appointment as technical representative in that country and Burma for the Paterson Engineering Company, Ltd., waterworks engineers, of London.
In this capacity he was responsible for the design, construction, and erection of plant. During the war of 1914-18 he was engaged on water supply schemes for the Government of India's military works, which included the provision of complete waterworks and reservoirs. In 1919 he was appointed managing director of the Paterson Engineering Company (India), Ltd., and held this appointment until his retirement in 1930. Mr. Walker was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1912, and was transferred to Membership in 1918. His death occurred at Tunbridge Wells on 21st July 1949."
