JAMES DIXON BEST was born at Hartlepool in 1874 and received his education and practical training in that town, the latter comprising five years principally in the lathe and erecting shops of Messrs. Thos. Richardson and Sons.
In 1893 he became an engineer in the Mercantile Marine, obtaining a first-class Board of Trade certificate in 1897.
In 1901 he was appointed Engineer in the Marine Department, Northern Nigeria, and except for a brief period with Messrs. W. R. Cunis of London in 1911-12, held this position until 1913.
In 1914 he was transferred to the Nigerian Railway as District Locomotive Superintendent at Ebute Metta, Lagos, West Africa.
In March 1925 he returned to England, and his death occurred on 16th October 1926.
Mr. Best because a Member of this Institution in 1921.
