Dr. Andrew was educated at King Edward VII School, Sheffield, and at the University of Sheffield, where he obtained a first class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and the Mappin Medal in 1947.

In 1949 he was awarded the degree of Ph.D. for research work carried out into factors affecting the strength of springs, the work being conducted for the Coil Spring Federation Research Organisation.

He joined the United Steel Companies Limited as a graduate apprentice, and was appointed Head of the Mathematics Section of their Swinden Laboratories in 1951, where he is engaged upon the application of statistical techniques to industrial problems.
