MORTIMER ADYE had been appointed branch engineer at Bombay of the Burmah Shell Oil Storage and Distributing Company of India about a year before his death at the early age of 30 years.
He was born in Port Louis, Mauritius, but received his education at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and later gained a diploma in mechanical engineering at the City and Guilds Engineering College, London.
From 1923 to 1926 he was apprenticed to Messrs. John G. Kincaird, engineers and boilermakers, of Greenock.
In 1927 he joined, as installation engineer, the Asiatic Petroleum Company, subsequently known as the Burmah-Shell Oil Storage and Distributing Company of India. Mr. Adye later became branch engineer, first for the Madras area, and, in 1932, for the Bombay area. One of the most important works for which he was responsible was the erection of a 2,000,000-gallon (118 feet diameter) benzene tank having a Wiggins floating roof.
Mr. Adye was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1922, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1932.
His death occurred in Bombay on 12th August 1933.
