. . . . In the following year he was placed under his brother, W. G. Laws, then Resident Engineer on the Wansbeck section of the North British Railway, where he remained until the completion of the extension of that line in 1864.

He was then engaged in Parliamentary and general engineering work for Mr. Tone until October, 1865, when he was appointed Resident Engineer on the Northumberland Central Railway, which post he held until March, 1867.

On leaving the service of that company he went into partnership with his brother, in private practice at Newcastle-on-Tyne. That partnership lasted until 1874, when Mr. W. G. Laws left the firm. . . . [more]
