HERMAN GEORGE DIXON was principal officer of the East of England District, Mercantile Marine Department, Board of Trade, at the time of his death on 17th August 1932 whilst on holiday at Copenhagen.

He was born at Chatham in 1869 and served his apprenticeship from 1884 to 1890 with Messrs. Bainbridge and Beckwith of Swansea and later with the Central Dry Dock and Engineering Company, also of Swansea. He subsequently gained considerable marine experience and obtained his Board of Trade certificates.

In 1898 Mr. Dixon was appointed a surveyor at the Board of Trade Office in Liverpool and in 1904 was transferred to the consultative branch at headquarters in London.

In 1920 he was promoted to be senior surveyor and was transferred in that capacity to the survey staff at Mark Lane, where he remained until his promotion to the position of principal officer at Hull in 1928.

During the War Mr. Dixon was loaned to the Ministry of Munitions and engaged on inspection work at Woolwich Arsenal.

He was later sent on behalf of the Government to America and the Continent in connexion with the taking over of reparation vessels.

He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1919.
