Herbert William Collier was born in 1907 and studied at the Woolwich Polytechnic.

Following his apprenticeship he joined the staff of Matchless Motor Cycles, Ltd., gaining experience in the manufacture of motor-cycles he also travelled as Technical Representative for the firm in Austria and Hungary. After a period in the drawing office he specialized on the experimental side, and later became General Manager of the firm.

He was killed in a motor-cycle accident on 31st October, 1942. He was 35.

He was elected a Graduate in 1926 and transferred to Associate Member in 1936.
