HERBERT STANLEY PURSEY, whose death occurred in his sixtieth year on 8th September 1944, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1904 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1907. He was the author of a paper in 1912 on "The Diesel Oil Engine". After serving his apprenticeship at the generating station of the Folkestone Electricity Supply Company, from 1899 to 1901, he was appointed engineer-in-charge and later was made station superintendent.

On the completion of a brief appointment as engineer in charge of a substation of the Charing Cross and Strand Supply Company he became shift engineer to the Wakefield and District Light Railway Company and subsequently took over the duties of senior charge engineer at the company's power house.

In 1906 he was appointed chief assistant engineer with responsibility for repairs and the maintenance of the rolling stock. Three years later he accepted an appointment as resident engineer to the Calcutta Tramways Company, but in 1916 he joined H.M. Forces and served as a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers for three years. From 1920 to 1925 he was station superintendent to the Twickenham and Teddington Electricity Supply Company.

His final position, which he held for nineteen years, was that of engineer and manager to the electricity department of the Ulverston Urban District Council.
