Herbert Kamerer Benson (1883-1949)

1950 Obituary [1]

"HERBERT KAMERER BENSON, M.B.E., was well known for many years in South Wales as a consulting engineer and insurance loss assessor.

He was born in 1883, and was educated at the Grammar School and the Technical College in Swansea. After serving his time at the Crewe works of the London and North Western Railway, from 1900 to 1903, he became a junior engineer in the electricity department of the Corporation of Swansea, and two years later was appointed mains engineer.

During the war of 1914-18 he served for five years in the Royal Engineers, rising to the rank of captain. On demobilization in 1919 he began his long career as a consultant in Swansea. In addition to his work for some forty leading insurance companies his advice was extensively sought by many trade unions and the South Wales Transport Company, Ltd., especially in connection with serious accidents. Throughout the war of 1939-45 he acted as consultant to the Board of Inland Revenue with regard to the settlement of claims for bomb damage to motor vehicles of all classes, his services as assessor being retained by that department after the cessation of hostilities. Mr. Benson, whose death occurred on 11th February 1949, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1913.

He was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers."
