1941 Obituary [1]
HERBERT JOHN GRAPES died on the 2nd September, 1941.
From the Sandown Elementary School, Isle of Wight, he obtained a scholarship to Newport Grammar School, and a further scholarship from there to Hartley College, now University College, Southampton, in 1898. Following a 3-year course he obtained a first-class graduateship, and in 1901 entered Messrs. Mordey Carney's, shipbuilders, as an improver. The firm was taken over by Messrs. J. J. Thornycroft in 1903, and he was then Chief Electrician. This status was raised to Electrical Engineer in 1916, which position he retained until his death.
He was elected an Associate Member of The Institution in 1916 and a Member in 1931, and was one of the original Members of the Committee of the Hampshire Sub-Centre, for some years acting as Local Honorary Treasurer to the I.E.E. Benevolent Fund. He was also The Institution's nominee on the Advisory Committee of the National Register of Electrical Installation Contractors for the Southampton Area. Of a somewhat retiring nature, he possessed much personal charm and will be greatly missed by his many friends.
