"HERBERT ALFRED BROADBENT served apprenticeships between 1907 and 1912 with J. Musgrove and Sons, Ltd., Bolton, and Manlove Alliott, Ltd., Nottingham. His technical training was obtained at Bolton Technical School, Salford Royal Technical College, and Nottingham University. After two years as outside erector for Lancaster and Tonge, Ltd., Manchester, he became attached to the fuse examination department of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich.
In 1916 he joined the staff of the British War Commission in the United States and was placed in charge of the examination of fuse loading at the Bethlehem Steel Works. Subsequently he was engaged for the Commission on mechanical transport. After his return to Great Britain in 1919 he received an appointment as works manager to David Bentley, Ltd., Salford, engineers, where he remained for twenty-one years. Mr. Broadbent, whose death occurred on 3rd September 1950 at the age of fifty-eight, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1926."
