HENRY ULF PETERSEN was born in Denmark in 1890, but spent practically all his life in South Africa. After receiving his education at the Marist Brothers School and at the School of Mines, in Johannesburg, he served his apprenticeship, from 1905 to 1908, with the General Mining and Finance Corporation. He remained with the firm as a draughtsman in the head office, where he was concerned with structural mining plant and building design, and he was also assistant engineer to the Cinderella Mine in the same group. In addition to his drawing office work he supervised the erection of surface and underground machinery. In 1913 he joined the Union Corporation, Ltd., as a draughtsman, subsequently rising to be chief assistant in charge of the drawing office.
From 1931 until his death, which occurred on 5th June 1941, he held the appointment of consulting mechanical engineer to the Union Corporation, having previously acted in that capacity, and was responsible for the design of reduction plant and for the plant maintenance work of six mining companies.
Mr. Petersen was elected a Member of the Institution in 1938, and was also a past-vice-president of the South African Institution of Engineers.
