1837 Business founded by Henry Smith

1842 The company moved to new premises known as Rutland Terrace Ironworks.

1842 Advertisement. 'Newly-invented Balance Horse Rake'. [1]

1844 His elder brother, presumably Nathaniel Smith, joined the business[2]

1844 Thomas Woodhouse Ashby joined Henry Smith and Co

1844 Sued by Joseph Cooke Grant over infringement of patent but Smith won the case.[3]

1851 Exhibited at the Great Exhibition

1853 The business was known as Smith and Ashby when Thomas W. Ashby became a partner
