HENRY JOHN SILLARS DUBS was born on 27th April 1848 at Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, being the eldest son of Mr. Henry Dubs of the Glasgow Locomotive Works (Proceedings 1877, page 18).

Having been educated in Scotland and in Germany, he served his apprenticeship in his father's works, in which he became a partner in 1876, and with which he continued to be identified up to the time of his death, which took place at Glasgow after a long illness on 5th April 1893, in the forty-fifth year of his age.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1877.
