A competitor to Worcester Sauce.

1885 Henry Henderson (1850-1930) blended his first batch of relish at home

By 1890 he had set up a grocer's shop but the relish was a side line.

1899 In an advert he described himself as "relish manufacturer"

1910 Seeking to retire, Henry sold his business to Shaws of Huddersfield, maker of jams and pickles.

The business was moved to a factory for the first time.

1940 Charles Hinksman, a former travelling salesman and son-in-law of George Shaw, bought the factory and established the business as a limited company Hendersons Relish Ltd

1951 Hinksman retired, his second wife Gladys taking over; she appointed her brother, Harvey Freeman, as managing director.

1958 Name changed to Hendersons (Sheffield) Ltd

1980s The older generation of Freemans retired/died.

1991 Dr Kenneth Freeman became managing director, retaining the secrecy of the recipe which was known to just a few family members.

1996 Eventually Henderson's Relish was stocked by one of the major supermarket chains

2013 Moved to new premises on Sheffield Business Park
