HARRY GEORGE MANTLE was born at Brierley Hill, Staffs, in 1858. Between 1871 and 1881 he received a technical and commercial training at the Old Level Iron Works, Brierley Hill, of which his father was the proprietor. He received his scientific education at Mason's College, Birmingham.
From 1881 to 1885 he gained further experience in commercial management as a member of the staff of Mr. James Holcroft, a colliery owner of Stourbridge. In the latter year he became proprietor of the Old Level Iron Works, and of the iron, steel, and coal firm of George Mantle and Company, Walsall. In addition to his work as an ironmaster, Mr. Mantle was keenly interested in geological subjects, on which he read various papers. Later he also devoted much time to local government affairs. In 1918 he retired and lived at Hampstead, where his death occurred on 5th December 1937.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1897.
