HAROLD SELLIS JEFFERIES was born at Ipswich on 13th October 1871.
Having been educated at Marlborough College, he entered in 1888 the Orwell Works of Messrs. Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, Ipswich, of which his father was managing director, and passed through all the departments.
In 1893 he began to assist his father in the management of the factory, and in 1894 and 1896 he paid prolonged visits to the Argentine on behalf of the Company, mainly for the purpose of reporting upon any modifications in the design of traction engines and thrashing machines necessary to the special requirements of that country.
On the death of his father in September 1900, he was appointed a director and rapidly assumed complete responsibility for all manufacturing questions.
On the outbreak of the War he energetically attacked the problem of munitions supply and rendered valuable services to the Ministry of Munitions, the District Committee, and the Boroughs of Ipswich. Mr. Jefferies served for some years as an officer in the Essex and Suffolk Royal Garrison Artillery, being Captain of the Ipswich Company, and he represented the Ipswich Corporation on the Suffolk Territorial Force Association. He was also a Justice of the Peace for the County of Suffolk.
His death took place at Sidmouth after an operation for appendicitis, on lot June 1917, at the age of forty-five.
He was elected a Member of this Institution in 1901.
