HAROLD MORGAN was a director and general manager of the Australian branch of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., and had been associated with that firm for more than thirty years. He was born in 1879 and received his general education at Clifton College and at Bedford Grammar School and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Robey and Company, of Lincoln from 1897 to 1899 and for a further two years with Messrs. Fraser and Chalmers in Chicago and at Erith. After gaining experience in Capetown as foreman erector in tramways stations and in the drawing office of the East Rand Mines, Ltd., he went to New Zealand and was engaged in gold mining operations.
On the completion of an appointment as outside erecting engineer to the Snow Steam Pump Works of Buffalo, U.S.A., in 1905, he returned to New Zealand where he ultimately held positions as manager and consulting engineer to various gold dredging companies. From 1910 to 1912 he was in the service of the New South Wales Government Railways as draughtsman and was concerned with electrification schemes. He then joined the staff of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, his first position being that of assistant engineer.
At this juncture he completed his technical training with a three years' course in electrical engineering at Sydney Technical College. In the absence of the general manager on war service Mr. Morgan became acting works manager and subsequently, on the confirmation of this provisional appointment, he assumed responsibility for the construction of the firm's new factory at Sydney. In 1927 he was made assistant manager with promotion to the post of general manager two years later.
He had been a member of the local board in Australia since 1932. Mr. Morgan, whose death occurred on 25th March 1944, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921.
