HAROLD FISHER SAWDEN served his apprenticeship with the Carlton Engineering Company of Millwall, and at the Albert Dock Engine Works, as a marine engineer. From 1894 to 1897, he was on the shore staff and at sea with Messrs. J. B. Westray's ships, the Duke of Buckingham and the Raikonra as fourth and fifth engineer. He passed his second engineer's Board of Trade examination and entered the employ of Messrs. J. Simpson and Company, at Pimlico, in 1897 and was engaged on the erection of pumping plants at home and abroad for several years.
He was assistant mechanical engineer to Kimberley Waterworks Company, South Africa, from 1906 to 1908, and mechanical engineer to the Province of Buenos Aires Waterworks Company from 1910 until 1915. He also superintended the erection of pumping plant at the Hammersmith and Honor Oak Stations of the Metropolitan Water Board. Towards the end of 1915 he went to Jamaica to install pumping machinery for an irrigation scheme for sugar plantations.
From 1917 to 1919, Mr. Sawden was on the staff of H.M. Office of Works for Birmingham and district. He was engineer and manager of Portishead and district water company for 20 years, and it was while making sure that lifting tackle was being placed in the correct position during the erection of new buildings, that he met with his death on 3rd March 1939, by falling from scaffolding.
Mr. Sawden was born in 1874 and was elected a Member of the Institution in 1915.
