It is with sorrow that we announce the death of Mr. H. Walter Staner, Editor "The Autocar" which occurred at his residence, Thanet House, St. Patrick's Road, Coventry, late last night. Mr. Staner, who was 51 years of age, was seized with illness three weeks ago, and this developed into pneumonia, which, despite a partial recovery last week, was succeeded by complications which proved fatal.
Mr. Staner was associated with the automobile industry in this country from its infancy. He was connected with "The Autocar" in Coventry from the foundation of that journal in 1895, a date at which the running of motor cars the road without a red flag in front was illegal. He was one of the best known men connected with the industry, not only in this country, but throughout the World. Naturally was a very keen and practical motorist.
His opinion, expressed editorially, with regard to contemporary design and developments carried great weight the industry and with car users. He was an extremely well informed critic, and was able to bring to bear in editorial capacity large technical knowledge and experience the trade.
His conduct of "The Autocar" revealed exceptional ability for dealing with the varied problems that arose during progress the trade, and keen insight into its present and future needs. He was a member of the Committee of the Royal Automobile Club and of the Institution of Automobile Engineers.
When Mr. Staner came to Coventry thirty-one years ago was associated with the clerical staff of Messrs. Iliffe and Sons, Ltd. Later his services with the firm were transferred to the staff of "The Cyclist " and Bicycling News," and upon the foundation of "The Autocar" he became associated with that journal, and of which he became editor in 1901, also carrying out the/ duties of supervising editor of the other automobile publications of Messrs. Iliffe and Sons,. Ltd.
It is a tragic coincidence that Mr. Harry J. Swindley, who until 1914 was closely associated with Mr. Staner during his connection with both "The Autocar" and "The Cyclist," passed away only three weeks ago.
In regard to Mr. Staner's local associations during his thirty-one years' residence in this city, he had made a large circle of friends, and had gained their affectionate regard. His kindly and considerate disposition and unassuming manner endeared him his fellow workers. At the time his death Mr. Staner was a churchwarden St. Michael's Collegiate Church, position had previously filled during the vicariate of Canon Masterman.
Mr. Staner leaves a widow, and with her, as well as the other relatives, the deepest sympathy will be felt.
