GEORGE WILLIAM THOMPSON served his apprenticeship with Mr. John Hauxwell, millwright and engineer, of Yarm-on-Tees, from 1867 to 1874. His first employment was as journeyman pattern maker to Messrs. Head, Wrightson and Company, engineers and bridge builders of Thornaby-on-Tees, where he was employed from 1874 to 1880. He then established a general engineering business on his own account at Norton, Stockton-on-Tees.
He was manager of the Test Valley Iron Works Company, near Southampton, from 1887 until he joined the Machinery Insurance Company, Ltd., as inspecting engineer in 1895. In the following year he was appointed chief engineer to Messrs. William Whiteley, Ltd., and held this post until 1903, when he joined Messrs. Harrods, Ltd., in a similar capacity. From 1911 until his retirement in 1931 he was inspecting engineer to Messrs. Mather and Platt, and was attached to the London office.
Mr. Thompson was elected a Member of the Institution in 1900. His death occurred on 9th February 1942, in his eighty-ninth year.
