GEORGE DUNCAN DREWITT, whose death occurred on 16th March 1943 in his sixty-sixth year, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1913. He was educated at Berkhamstead School and received his technical training at Grantham and at Nottingham University. On the completion of a four years' apprenticeship with Messrs. R. Hornsby and Sons of Grantham in 1898 he was employed for a further two years in the drawing office and test department of that firm.
From 1901 to 1906 he travelled widely on the Continent and in the Middle East as an expert in oil engines and as foreign representative on behalf of Messrs. Hornsby. He then received an appointment as resident mechanical engineer to the Nile Valley Gold Mine, and two years later joined the mechanical engineering staff of the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works, in whose service he continued until 1915, when he received a temporary commission as captain in the Royal Engineers and served on the Suez Canal defences.
From 1916 to 1919 he was engaged, first, at Woolwich Arsenal as inspector of guns and carriages, and subsequently at the Erith works of Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., in a similar capacity. Mr. Drewitt's retirement took place a year later.
