G. F. W. Adler, BSc (Eng) DIC Fellow obtained his degree at London University and a joint diploma in mechanical engineering at Cardiff.

He joined English Electric at Rugby in 1945 as a graduate apprentice. In 1948 he was awarded the diploma of Imperial College for post-graduate studies in hydro-power engineering. On returning to English Electric he worked in the water turbine department until 1955. The following year he was appointed Chief Development Engineer for EE's Rugby and Whetstone works.

In 1958 he moved to Marconi at Chelmsford as Chief Mechanical Engineer, transferring in 1962 to the Company's Felling on Tyne establishment as manager of the newly-formed mechanical products section. He rejoined English Electric at Netherton in 1966 to take over management of the water turbine and valve divisions, together with the fluid power activities of the Marconi Company. He joined the British Hydromechanics Research Association at Cranfield in 1971 as Director of Research.
