"FREDERICK WILLIAM VICKERY, O.B.E., who by his inventions made many important contributions to the efficiency of paper-making machinery, was the founder and governing director of Messrs. Vickerys, Ltd., London.
He was born in 1876, and was educated privately and at Ilminster Grammar School. After gaining experience in his father's engineering works he began his career as an inventor in 1897, obtaining his first patent in that year. In 1909 he started an engineering works to develop certain of his patented machines, and in the following year established the firm of Messrs. Vickerys, Ltd. His inventions included the "Vickery" automatic sheet feeder for printing machines; but it was in the paper-making field that he was best known. His paper laying machine, Doctor; felt conditioner, Dirtec, and other machines are in use throughout the world. After the war of 1914-18 his services to the Ministry of Munitions in connection with the improvement of hand grenades, artillery fuses, and pistols were recognized by a number of awards, including the O.B.E. Mr. Vickery, whose death occurred on 11th January 1949, had been a Member of the Institution since 1921."
