Frederick John Cowlin, O.B.E., spent the major part of his professional career in the employ of English Electric Co., Ltd., Rugby, engaged on steam turbine work. For thirteen years prior to his death, which occurred on 28th June 1956 at the age of sixty-five, he held the position of Chief Engineer of their Steam Turbine Department, and over the previous twenty years he had served with the company in the capacities of Chief Technical Assistant and Draughtsman.

He held commissioned rank in the Royal Engineers during the 1914-18 war.

His education was gained at East London College and at Glasgow Technical College. Meanwhile he served as an apprentice for five years with Yarrow and Co., Glasgow. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1938 and transferred to Member in 1943. He was also an Associate Member of the Institute of Marine Engineers.
