Mr. Frank W. Harris died in Detroit, Mich., on March 31, 1942, at the age of 44.
Mr. Harris was born in 1897 and was educated at Five Ways Grammar School, Birmingham, and Birmingham University, where he obtained his M.Sc. degree in 1922.
The subject of his thesis was "The Hardness of the Brasses, and Some Experiments on its Measurement by Means of a Strainless Indentation," which was published in the same year in the Institute's Journal.
After filling one or two temporary positions in Birmingham, Mr. Harris left in May 1923, to take up an appointment as Technical Metallurgist with the American Smelting and Refining Company of Baltimore, O.
He stayed with this firm until May, 1929, when he joined Evans-Wallower Zinc Company, where, in conjunction with Mr. Urban C. Tainton, he worked on the development of a galvanized wire which was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Company and is now known as "Bethanized wire."
In 1934 he went to the Revere Copper and Brass Company as Technical Advisor, and later became Supervisor of Methods to the Detroit Division, a position he held at his death. Besides being a member of the Institute of Metals, to which he was elected in 1922, he belonged to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and the American Society for Metals.
He leaves a widow and two children.
