1946 Obituary [1]

FRANK REGINALD KIRKLAND was born in 1887 and received his education at the Derby Municipal School and at University College, Nottingham. In 1903 he entered the locomotive works of the Midland Railway at Derby, and, on completing his apprenticeship in 1907, continued in the service of the company as an engineering assistant and draughtsman for a further eight years.

In 1915 he was commissioned in the Royal Engineers and served for four years. After two years' experience as engineer to the New British Fuel Syndicate, Ltd., for whom he was responsible for the design, construction, and operation of experimental plant for briquetting peat, he became an assistant in the drawing office of the City and Guilds (Engineering) College, South Kensington, and was placed in charge of design in connection with the post-graduate course, with particular reference to railway engineering.

He continued in this work until his death, which occurred in December 1945. Mr. Kirkland was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1925.
