1839 Inventor of the Stevens cut-off and valve gear for marine beam engines
1840 The Stevens cut-off was first applied on the engine of the steamboat Albany; also applied on the Columbus owned by his uncle Robert.
1841 Gained a patent for this device. Francis sold a half share in the patent to his father, James A. Stevens.
